By Rich Mancuso

Sadly the pro wrestling world got the news Friday that “Macho Man”
Randy Savage tragically died when his vehicle swirled off a Tampa Florida road and struck a tree. A heart attack at the wheel was the initial cause of death though an autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

So the pro wrestling world is once again in mourning. Savage, 58-years old and from a legendary pro wrestling family was surviving on his virtues of being a former WWF world and intercontinental champion. Though the past few years, when seen in public, there was a different look and no resemblance of the Savage we saw when Vince McMahon and the WWF once again became prominent.

There were no suspicions of steroid abuse, and alcohol was not a reason as to why Savage lost control of his vehicle. According to his brother, “Leaping Lanny” Poffo, there was no evidence of alcohol abuse. It was probable heart failure at the wheel that still has to be confirmed, an unfortunate and untimely death that has the wrestling community reflecting on the impact Savage left.

For the moment, we don’t have to blame the abuse of pain killers or anabolic steroids as a cause for the loss of a real pro wrestling Hall of Famer. And that is a pleasant change because over the years the death of a pro wrestler has always been attributed to the abuse of body enhancement drugs and pain killers.

With all of that out of the way it is time to reflect a bit about a second generation wrestler who arrived at the right moment. It was a time in the 1980’s when the pro wrestling revival revolved around Savage, his real wife Elizabeth Hulette, known as the valet “Miss Elizabeth, a character Savage did not want his wife to pursue.

And of course at a time when “Hulkamania” was running wild as Savage and Hulk Hogan became friends, partners, and then real adversaries in and out of the ring. There was this jealousy that reportedly developed between Hogan and Savage, at the time, two of the most prominent stars on the WWF roster. Of course Hogan was the model citizen for Vince McMahon and Savage was a part of the storyline who kept the pieces together for Hogan.

At one time, Savage said to this writer, “The business is good. One day Hogan will fall apart. The business should not evolve around one wrestler.” Meaning? Of course the marketing plan was all “Hulkamania” and nothing else. Though Savage was right behind Hogan when it came to the sold out arenas, pay-per-view main events, and sales of merchandise and it helped the WWF to what has become a billion dollar empire.

In due time the Hogan-Savage alliance was going to end, it had to, because a good run always comes to a conclusion in pro wrestling. Hogan would continue to highlight the cards, sell out arenas, even as his ego continued to swell more, and the Randy Savage image for some reason continued to dwindle.

But Savage, who got fame because of his charisma and his “Oooh Yeah!” catchphrase, would eventually fade away. Injuries and his continued marital problems with Miss Liz made it more difficult to be a top line performer for the company. Many say Hogan had a lot to the demise of Randy Savage. Rumors were rampant that Hogan and Liz were in a relationship that contributed more to the Savage animosity towards Hogan.

Hogan and Liz were often seen together and Savage was not to be found. That added fuel to the fire that a divorce was imminent with Savage and Liz, but that could never be confirmed. Then it was Hogan and Savage appearing together again, and all the rumors were put to rest. Part of pro wrestling theatre maybe, or was it reality because getting reports were not as accurate or quick with web sites in infancy stages.

Hogan recently mended fences with Savage after not speaking to him the past 10-years. He was quoted Friday saying, “He had so much life in his eyes and in his spirit. I just pray that he’s happy and in a better place and we miss him.”

He last wrestled for TNA in 2004 and there were reports last week that “The Macho Man” was going to return to Total Nonstop Action wrestling. Of course it was another rumor as Savage, who spent much of the last few years as a recluse, could not be reached for comment.

“He was a friend and a true icon to this business,” commented Hall of Famer Terry Funk from the double-cross ranch in Texas. “His charisma and how he always was there for you was something special,” he said. “I am saddened and will miss him.” Those sentiments came one-by-one from current and former superstars who grew up watching Savage or had the pleasure of working with him

The immediate reaction of Savage’s death surely showed how respected he was in and out of the wrestling ring. His patterned move of the flying elbow off the top rope was never duplicated. It was a move that wrestling fans knew would lead to another Savage win, and when he went to the top tope the cameras would flash for that special moment.

In what is now known as the WWE Universe, millions of fans who watch and attend WWE programming every year, to them Savage was also an icon. And to Savage the fans were special. He once said to this writer that WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome, an indoor attendance record of 93.173 that still holds “Was a highlight because it was a every fan screaming for The Macho Man.”

We will never forget all of his WrestleMania moments. Or the interviews with Mean Gene Okerland when Savage would take over, because there will never be another “Macho Man” Randy Savage.

Time to celebrate the life of a pro wrestler that gave us thrills. Rest in Peace “Macho Man” a true icon.

By Rich Mancuso

Yes, I watched Monday Night RAW tonight and when the telecast ended, I too, extended a Happy Birthday greeting to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Now we are not accustomed to seeing a WWE superstar, that is, if the Rock still is, provided such an occasion. Reality it was for sure and well deserved!

I recall meeting the Rock, years later, at the MTV Music Awards in New York City. This was after many years of not knowing who “Little Dwayne” was. You see, there was a time when Dwayne wasn’t The Rock. He used to attend shows with his father Rocky Johnson. Little Dwayne needed to be watched while his father went in the ring.

And so, years later, at the awards, I get the stare. The sun glasses came off. His finger pointed at me to come over to him. “You…You..You…Rich Mancuso,” he said. I wondered? Why would The Rock call me over? “You.. You… don’t remember,” he would say. “You used to take me by the hand and me and you watched my father in the ring,” he said.

Yeah, that was not Little Dwayne. It was now The Rock. And he was it his best. Little did I know that it was Little Dwayne all grown up, the WWE superstar and later a prominent motion picture character that has come home to WWE, this time for the year- long buildup to the WrestleMania main event in Miami Florida next April with John Cena.

And it is indeed The Rock who will once again carry the WWE Empire of Vince McMahon the next year. He is home, as McMahon proclaimed Monday evening. A deserved tribute for the Rock’s 39th birthday in Miami and of course John Cena with the championship belt made it known that he has arrived once again with the title. And the WWE title now has to go through Cena.

Again, I would like to see how WWE writers are going to keep this suspense going with Mania, 11 months from now. It is unprecedented to stage a main event so far off, but The Rock is one person that can keep it going. That is, assuming, Cena does not get hurt and if they don’t flip-flop the title on and off Cena. It’s a gamble and if anyone can pull it off it is the creative team at WWE, even though the product has lost some interest with their bizarre angles. Let’s face it, The Rock back on WWE programming, is better than watching Michael Cole each and every week make himself look like a fool.

So that was the real Dwayne Johnson getting a serenade of Happy Birthday wishes from the WWE Universe in Miami. His mother, proudly at ringside with other family and good friends, and it was real. You could see The Rock gloating, almost fighting back the tears.

He has done so much for the business over the years. There were times when The Rock had his doubters. Even Vince McMahon and the creative team gave it a chance. Dwayne Johnson and McMahon devised the character. The Rock became one of the biggest wrestling superstars of this new entertainment era of pro wrestling.

There was never resentment. The “Boys” in the locker room welcomed him, not because he was the son of a legend. There was talent, and the character and finishing move have entertained fans and other superstars since its inception. And now The Rock is home for the limited run of WWE programming engagements leading up to his match with Cena that will surely surpass every WrestleMania to date.

Yes, The Rock had a Birthday bash on Monday Night RAW. And he made it one heck of a spectacle for two hours. Happy Birthday Dwayne Johnson, or is it Little Dwayne, and many more!

Are you satisfied? Fans of the WWE Universe get roster changes again with their annual draft televised on RAW Monday night. Of course it is ...

Are you satisfied? Fans of the WWE Universe get roster changes again with their annual draft televised on RAW Monday night. Of course it is a draft for ratings purposes as the USA network RAW program has been doing better in the ratings over the SciFi network Smackdown product. It’s all the same you say? Think twice.

See they do what they want to do at WWE corporate headquarters up in Stamford Connecticut. What the heck is the decision making in moving John Cena and Randy Orton to Friday Nights? Oh wait a second, because Cena is once again on RAW. Apparently Christian is not enough to draw ratings on Smackdown. So the unexpected retirement of Edge was a major blow. So here comes, Orton to save the show.

Plus you can never understand the real concept of roster moves made by the WWE with this annual draft. But remember this is pre-determined and a part of the script. Because the WWE writers have not been getting it right with the products they deliver two times of week on their network programs.

Now to go a step further because Orton is dratted to Smackdown and his feud with CM Punk should come to a resolution at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view Sunday. Oh how predictable is this match because Punk stays on RAW and Orton is now on Friday nights. We want to see this feud conclude. So WWE goes along and spoils the fun by staging this draft on Monday Night before Extreme Rules instead of doing it the week after.

You can understand Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara changing places. Cara is the young Mexican projected to succeed Mysterio as the high flying superstar. Smackdown will benefit with his acquisition. Mysterio, with constant talk of an impending retirement, benefits by the move to Monday night where there will be a mass audience. And if as it appears, Alberto Del Rio, now on the RAW roster gets the WWE title, the natural thing to do is feud Del Rio and Myterio on Monday night.

Okay, but Christian and Del Rio have a match for the world title at Extreme Rules. Does that mean we can automatically assume that Christian becomes the new champion? Not necessarily because the Smackdown roster now has Orton, perhaps more popular than Christian. And now it is more realistic the way the Smackdown roster has changed to put the belt around Orton.

All of this is speculation of course. And if Edge was still in the picture we would have not been talking about the roster changes. It is all about ratings at WWE headquarters and when one of their major superstars is off a show, like an injured player on a team, roster moves have to be made.

You see they meet in this big board room once a week at WWE headquarters. They discuss ratings and who is going over and who is not. They could care less about what we want to see on what program. And it really does not matter. Because how many times do you see a Smackdown superstar on RAW Monday night and a RAW superstar on Smackdown Friday night?

Quite often there is back-and-forth from Monday night to Friday night because the shows have also become an indicator as to where the ratings are headed. What superstar will bring better ratings to Monday Night RAW or to Friday Night Smackdown? Watch in the next few weeks as the ratings will determine.

So don’t worry about Orton on Friday night or Punk not seeing Orton again because this time they will bump into each other on Friday night, or again on Monday night. This is not the NFL draft that has rules. WWE superstars all work for the same company, just different brands.

Oh, only one thing remains. Draft Michael Cole off the announce team of both brands.

By Rich Mancuso

Ladies and Gentleman, may I have your attention please. And with those words Michael Cole has become a major part of the WWE script. Now, may I have your attention please? Cole is no Vince McMahon and the writers at WWE, if they are still referred to as a wrestling company, need to end the Cole angle and end the feud with Jerry “The King” Lawler.

You can’t distinguish who the real Michael Cole is. The voice of WWE and broadcast journalist, or this horrible heel that continues to draw heat from the WWE universe, and there seems to be no resolution when it comes to destroying the integrity of a legend, Jerry “the King” Lawler.

So let me have your attention please. Michael Cole at the “Extreme Rules” pay-per-view should be destroyed by Lawler and Jim Ross. At least it should happen this way. He takes a few weeks off, and like most story lines go, he returns and we are to forget how awful this angle has been the past few months.

Can I have your attention please? Cole is so out of character. He is not a Paul Heyman, and have you observed his mannerisms trying to be a second coming of the evil minded Vince McMahon. Did you see that terrible act of Cole getting royalty from a fake Queen on Monday Night RAW? How about duplicating what McMahon did to Ross a few years back?

Though this time it was Ross forced to kissing the fungus on Cole’s foot and not the bosom of McMahon on national television. It was horrible, even the mannerisms of Cole as an all-time heel announcer. And the humiliation that Lawler and Ross continue to take is redundant and ridiculous.

So let me have your attention please? And how many times does Cole revert to being this professional broadcast journalist in the course of a broadcast. That stupid protected cube, where Cole is situated every week, needs to be crushed and destroyed once and for all.

“Ladies and Gentlemen,” says Cole time and time again on RAW and Smackdown broadcasts. Come on, a heel announcer needs to always be in character. Address the universe as fans. They are not all ladies and gentleman, plenty of kids in the arenas the last time we looked.

And the divas, as much as they are more there for other purposes, demographics and ratings, Cole destroys their integrity and spotlight as the writers have Cole going to the top of his protective cube and asking the divas to end their match. Because Cole has another major announcement: “May I have your attention Please?”

Yeah, Vickie Guerrero is annoying with “Excuse Me, Excuse Me,” but that gets quality heat and it works. So let me have your attention please for a moment and provide some thoughts.

Lawler and “Good Old JR” end this travesty of a wrestling angle a week from Sunday. It was good while it lasted, the WrestleMania match that grabbed some interest but also was disappointing. They can’t let this continue after the Pay-per-view.

There is only so much pain that JR can take from a Swagger ankle lock submission. Lawler is never around to save JR, and if you noticed, Cole gets to do the pounding as we wait, when he will be humiliated and the heel character becomes a thing of the past.

Oh one more time, Let me Have Your Attention Please. This is pro wrestling or entertainment. And the writers of the script need to convince Mr. McMahon to revive his character one more time.

Mr. McMahon make the save and assists Lawler and Ross by humiliating Michael Cole a week from Sunday. That should be a good climax, we can only hope.

AS I SEE IT
Bob Magee
Pro Wrestling: Between the Sheets
PWBTS.com

The first night of CHIKARA’s King of Trios weekend rocked the ECW Arena last night before a full house.

The evening began with an emotional video tribute to Larry Sweeney.

The Osirian Portal (Ophidian/Hieracon/Amasis) defeated Team 3OLE (El Generico, Scott “Jagged” Parker/Shane Matthews) after the Portal hit the Osirian Sacrament on Shane Matthews at about 18 minutes, complete with the almost mandatory Osirian Portal dance spot.

F.I.S.T. (Icarus/Chuck Taylor/Johnny Gargano) defeated Team Australia (Tama Williams/Percy/Kabel) after Johnny Gargano pins Tama Williams at 11:13. Looks off to see F.I.S.T without Gran Akuma.

Bruderschaft des Kreuzes (Tim Donst/Delirious/Jakob Hammermeier) defeated Da Soul Touchaz (Willie Richardson/Acid Jaz/Marshe Rockett) when Jakob pinned Acid Jazz, after outside Tursas interference from Tursas at about 11 minutes:.

Mike Quackenbush, Jigsaw, and Manami Toyota defeated The Amazing Red and the Maximos after a ’68 Comeback Special by Quackenbush, followed by a top rope elbow by Jigsaw on Will Maximo at 10 minutes. It was a bigtime thrill to see Toyota live after all these years.

Team Dragon Gate (Super Shisa/Akira Tozawa/Kagetora) defeated The Spectral Envoy (Hallowicked/Frightmare/UltraMantis Black) after Super Shisa hit the Yoshitonic on Frightmare at 15 minutes.

Team Osaka Pro (Atsushi Kotoge/Daisuke Harada/Ultimate Spider, Jr.) defeated the trio of the Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield/Sugar Dunkerton) and Matt Classic after Ultimo Spider Jr. cradled Matt Classic at 17 minutes with a La Magistral

The Colony (Fire Ant/Soldier Ant/Green Ant) defeated The Dark Army (Sinn “Kizarny” Bodhi/Obariyon/Kodama) after 17 minutes, when Obariyon was nailed with the Ant Hill. Sinn “Kizarny” Bodhi didn’t make any friends after pre-show remarks that some took as a sideways crack at Larry Sweeney (watching the clip, looks like it was actually just part of Bodhi’s character…and not intended the way some took it…but even CHIKARA alumni Gran Akuma said he’s have been in jail had he been at the Arena last night.

Team Michinoku Pro (Great Sasuke/Dick Togo/Jinsei Shinzaki) defeated. Team Minnesota (1-2-3 Kid/Arik Cannon/Darin Corbin) after a after a Dick Togo senton by on Darin Corbin after 23 minutes. Watching the “original” Michinoku Pro team was a thrill…gotta wonder why Dick Togo wants to retire as he hasn’t missed a step and looked great in the ring

Night 2 of CHIKARA’s King of Trios weekend then took place with another full house, depsite torrential rain and thunderstorm throughout the Philadelphia area (which might have cost a few walk-up fans), a Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup playoff game, and a rare Philadelphia 76ers playoff game..

Archibald Peck defeated Colt Cabana (nice way to treat the NWA Champion). Peck does a high school band leader gimmick with a baton twirler valet…gimmick seemed more suited for an indy that does shows in junior high schools than a show like this). Peck won with a baton shot, then a diving headbutt at nine minutes.

F.I.S.T. (Icarus/Chuck Taylor/Johnny Gargano) defeated Team Osaka Pro (Atsushi Kotoge/Daisuke Harada/Ultimate Spider, Jr.) when Chuck Taylor rolled up Spider at 19 minutes

Rey De Voladores match 1 saw Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Pinkie Sanchez vs. El Generico vs. Marshe Rockett (and heel BDK referee Derek Sabato). First fall saw Pinkie pin Marshe Rockett at 13 minutes after some help from heel BDK referee Sabato. Second elimination had Sanchez elimninate Zach Sabre Jr.by pinfall at 16 minutes with a Springboard seated splash. The final fall saw El Generico defeat Sanchez with a cool-looking Turnbuckle Brainbuster on Pinkie in 21 minutes.

The Osirian Portal (Ophidian/Hieracon/Amasis) defeated Team Dragon Gate (Super Shisa/Akira Tozawa/Kagetora) after a 450 splash by Amasis on Super Shisa at about 21 minutes

In a singles match, Eddie Kingston defeated Arik Cannon with the Sliding D at 7 minutes.

Stacy Podelski

If the reports of Adam ‘Edge’ Copeland retirement are true, which many sources on the internet say it is, then fans of the WWE Product lost more than just a superstar. Fans lost a star that gave it his all night in and night out to do what he loved to do.

It is still shocking to many that this young man had to hang up his boots, but also understandable. There are many that feel it is better that he left this way, instead of pushing his body to the point of no return. Copeland now accomplishes a feat that many dream off-leaving at the top of his game and as a champion.

The thing that is upsetting many WWE fans as well as the company itself-is the idea of losing a versatile star in the company. Copeland could not only tug at the heart strings of fans everywhere, but he also accepted any challenge.

For the longest time Edge was stuck, like many talented stars in what is called ‘mid-card status.’ Fans loved him and the merchandise flew off the stands, but the blond star never truly had a look at singles heavyweight gold until a decision would be made that would forever change his career.

Weather it was his own call or the call of WWE Creative Edge turned heel and made the fans hate him. It was thanks to his many great performances as a heel that would allow him the many successful runs with the one strap that had eluded him.

Throughout that heel run Edge did just one thing to get fans to believe that he could carry the company, consistently put on solid matches. Yes he also cut some very good heel promos, but he made the fans respect him through some great rivalries.

Once established as a legitimate star in the ‘main-event’ spotlight Edge could do whatever he pleased with his character. He could be the face the company needed to push the new heels up the ladder, or continue in his way as a heel to help push the faces.

Either way Copeland would leave every single shred of his body, heart and soul in the ring. Selling each moment to the fans was a tough task, but Edge was up to the challenge and his consistent performances made him someone that everyone respected.

In the end Copeland is a perfect blue print on how to succeed in the WWE and not necessarily be the biggest guy in terms of bulk and muscle. This one journalist will always appreciate Copeland for the fact that he was a man in pursuit of a dream, and truly genuinely loved what he did.

So for the memories, the many great moments and making people believe that dreams come true this one journalist would like to say thank you Adam ‘Edge’ Copeland. And know now that all of us members of the WWE Universe will look forward to that day when you take your rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame!

Stacy Rae Podelski

At one point in time the WWE had stars galore, a fan could look up and down the roster and just drool over the dream matches that could happen. In spite of the many talents that are currently in the company there is serious trouble for the company.

None of the young lions are ready for the spotlight, none of them are ready for the title, and worse yet for fans they keep getting pushed aside for the stars that are in place already. So who can the company count on to help propel them for generations to come-let us take a look.

Daniel Bryan: For some reason the WWE never liked small guys, which is a shame. Bryan takes the fans back to a day in which submission wrestling is cool. As of now the company has him in a feud with Sheamus, but is not even giving it the time and the storyline to succeed.

Bryan has proven himself as a go to guy in many independent wrestling organizations, and can sell a good storyline with Sheamus. Sadly for fans he will never get the push needed to succeed in the company.

Drew McIntyre: At one point in time this Scottish superstar was touted as the ‘Chosen One.’ Well this young lion’s stock has dropped tremendously since his start with the company. At one point in time the company had this odd storyline with Kelly Kelly, which somehow worked its way to a title shot. Sadly that did nothing more than build up Edge for his match at WrestleMania.

The WWE had many good opportunities to push McIntyre and still have the time to do so. McIntyre has the ability to cut good heel promos along with a very solid skill set. A good feud on Raw with Sheamus or maybe the company can even revisit a feud with Edge will be just what the Scotsman needed.

Ted DiBiase/Cody Rhodes: In the ironic but true category, these sons of Hall of Famer’s have had a hard time finding their place in the company. At one point in time they were a part of many dominant teams, but have yet found their place in the singles scene.

Now Rhodes is starting to get a minor push with this whole “Phantom of the WWE” bit, with the clear facemask and sour attitude. Along with that is a new aggression and great heel promos, hopefully that will help the young man work his way up the ladder.

As for DiBiase no one has seen this young man in action for quite some time. A great feud for the young lion would be with one Alberto Del Rio. Right now the Mexican Aristocrat is shooting up the ladder of the WWE and a good feud with these two may interest fans. Whose money will reign over the company-only one way to find out?

John Morrison: The resident Spider-Man of the company has not yet had the opportunity to go for the heavyweight strap. In spite of putting on some of the better matches and improving with his skill set, Morrison has not yet been allowed the time to shine.

WWE missed the boat with this year’s WrestleMania of building up a great feud between former tag team partners and friends between Morrison and The Miz. These two could have told a great story and The Miz has been excellent with pushing some of his fellow younger stars to new levels. Hopefully one day the WWE will let us see this feud.

There are many other stars on the roster that have not yet had their time to shine, and hopefully the WWE will do something about that; especially if the WWE wants their brand to thrive for the years to come.

Transportation:

For those staying at hotels in the Philadelphia area, you can call any one of the companies on this link. Remember, the Arena is at the corner of Swanson and Ritner in South Philadelphia. For the purposes of some cab drivers who may not be familiar with the corner (see map below), you may wish to tell them to look for the Forman Mills store (a block from the ECW Arena), painted yellow on the outside.

For those choosing public transportation, Philadelphia’s SEPTA has bus and subway service that will take you to the ECW Arena. Anyone staying in center city Philadelphia, or points north, can get to the Arena using the Broad Street Subway (exit at Snyder Avenue Station). You will need to come to street level, buy a transfer, and take the 79 bus eastbound towards Front Street. From there, take a RIGHT, just past the I-95 viaduct; and walk down to Swanson Street. Take a LEFT and walk two blocks, as seen on this link (Adobe Acrobat required).

You can also take the Broad Street Subway to the Oregon Avenue stop. You will need to come to street level, buy a transfer, and take the G bus eastbound to Front Street. From there, take a LEFT, and walk down to Swanson Street. Take a RIGHT and walk one block, just past the I-95 viaduct; as seen on this map (Adobe Acrobat required).

Hotel: For those coming to the area for King of Trios weekend in need of a place to stay, we recommend the Philadelphia Airport Marriott. The hotel is connected directly to the Philadelphia International Airport, and is located just over 10 miles from the ECW Arena, which makes for a short cab ride to and from King of Trios. You can call 1-800-682-4087 to make reservations and book your room. You may be able to find discounted room rates through online websites, but Marriott locations near airports rarely show much deviation from the established prices. The second floor of the hotel connects directly to Terminal B of the airport, so you do not need transportation to get there.

Transportation: As stated above, the Philadelphia Airport Marriott is located just over 10 miles from the ECW Arena, accessible via a short cab ride. You will be able to arrange a rental car, or have the Marriott front desk call you a taxi cab. Again, remember, the Arena is at the corner of Swanson and Ritner in South Philadelphia. For the purposes of some cab drivers who may not be familiar with the corner (see map below), you may wish to tell them to look for the Forman Mills store (a block from the ECW Arena), painted yellow on the outside.

Parking: The ECW Arena has a fenced-in parking lot behind the facility. You can park there free of charge, but you will not be able to enter through the rear of the building. There is also parking around front where the main entrance and the blowing garbage is typically found. There is also an entrance directly across the street from the parking lot of the Arena. That wil llikely be open as well

Admission: CHIKARA tends to open the doors to the general public about 30 minutes prior to belltime. For events like this, you can expect to see a line forming even before that, even in the worst weather. Those holding an official CHIKARMY membership card will be allowed in 15 minutes prior to the “official” opening of the doors. It will be possible to buy tickets at the door the day of the event(s), at no extra charge.

Food: The Arena has a concession stand open during the shows with basic food and drink items, including pulled pork sandwiches, pretzels, soda, water, beer, and muffins.

Other restaurants within a short walk for pre-show and post-show meals include the Oregon Diner, Tony Luke’s cheesesteak stand (and the Tony Luke’s Beef and Beer sports bar across the street), as well as McDonald’s, KFC, and Dunkin Donuts are located about 3 blocks away from the Arena on Oregon Avenue.

Slightly farther away on 330 West Oregon Avenue is the Empire Buffet with many Chinese, seafood (and some American) items. There are neighborhood bars, including Nickel’s Tavern, a favorite for some wrestling fans, inbetween the Empire Buffet and the Arena. 2 blocks NORTH of the Arena on Snyder Avenue are several restaurants, including John’s Roast Pork (reported as the best pork sandwich in Philadelphia), a Boston Market, and City Pizza.

Saturday afternoon will feature the fourth annual Fan Conclave at 2:30 pm prior to showtime. Tickets for this year’s Fan Conclave are $10 (free to those buying tickets for all three nights) . Along with wrestler autographs and gimmick sales, Stan Bush (who has the official song of King of Trios 2011) will be performing a concert during the Fan Conclave. Tickets for all events are available NOW at the CHIKARA store.

Until next time…

If you have comments/questions/event announcements/results, if you’d like to add the AS I SEE IT column to your website, or if you’d like to add advertising on PWBTS.com (the flagship website of this column), e-mail me at the address above.

By Rich Mancuso

Are we fools? Apparently the WWE thinks we are. After a dull WrestleMania XXVII Sunday evening in Atlanta it was so predictable that it would be The Rock against John Cena in Miami next April 1st as the main event for WrestleMania XXVIII. Yes it has come down to this, that a main event for the biggest wrestling event on the calendar is a year away.

That hierarchy now brainwashing fans, those who put it all together for WWE, the script writers this time, have hit “Rock Bottom” in their desperation to keep their product going another year. But this unprecedented announcement on RAW Monday night leaves a lot of questions.

Yes it shapes up to be a match of great proportion. The Rock and Cena who represent two different and recent eras of this so called WWE universe and for whatever it is worth one would assume it will be well anticipated. A year from now, though, leaves plenty of questions.

Is the Rock now a fulltime roster member again of WWE? Does he leave a successful Hollywood career or go on hiatus and work shows the next 52 weeks leading to the next Mania? And for Cena, hindered by injuries, does he avoid missing time because of a bad shoulder, bicep, or anything else that occasionally puts him on the shelf?

You see, making a main event as good as it seems, a year in advance, does have some risks. Not to count the story lines have to continue and one would assume Cena, more than the Rock, will still be involved in the WWE title picture. How the Rock stands in all of this remains to be determined because it is not known if he has signed a yearlong deal with his return or spot appearances.

What is the objective, so soon and so far away of a Cena-Rock showdown? Nothing really, because the WWE is running themselves right off the map despite all the popularity and good ratings that continue to be public knowledge. However the hard core wrestling fan, those not being a new generation of kids, are tuning away and turned off.

Mr. McMahon is desperate and needs the Rock to pull in fans he had ten years ago. At the same time Cena, like him or not, has brought in another generation of fans. Two of the most popular superstars in the past ten years are locked in a feud that we will hear about time and time again.

However, the objective of WrestleMania from the inception was to always milk the shows weeks and months before. Meaning fans would obviously speculate as to who would main event at WrestleMania. Guess now the Royal Rumble, that always had the angle of the winner taking on the champion of WWE, or the world would get the title shot at Mania will not hold any significance.

Now that changes. So does the anticipation because it is the Rock against Cena and you know it was coming. And hopefully the writers who scripted this WrestleMania of Sunday past will put Rock and Cena last and not at the beginning.

Unless we get another Undertaker-Triple H match which was hinted on RAW Monday night. That should have been the last match on Sunday at the Georgia Dome and not Cena versus the Miz.

As the Miz says “Awesome.” But you are not going to hear that word here. Setting a main event for WrestleMania a year in advance, the biggest stage of them all is not the objective of what a pro wrestling fan wants. You need to keep the viewers watching and now the fun is just about over.

Please, whoever is responsible for the script, we hope you were teasing. This is not the way pro wrestling is supposed to be.
