It’s time for a Change: The Intercontinental Championship

By : Posted on

I try not to look back, at least in my own life it is a source of immense frustration. However when you look at the IC title these days it is difficult not to look back to better days. At one time the IC belt was an important title. It mattered. It was the second most prestigious title in the WWE. Men proudly wore this title and defended it feverishly. Men like the Macho man Randy Savage, Mr Perfect, Razor Ramon, Stone Cold Steve Austin and the Rock just to name a few. All of these IC champions have something in common. The IC title was an important step in their Career. For Savage, Austin and the Rock it was an important step on their way to becoming WWE champion. For Perfect and Ramon their success in the WWE was defined by their time as IC champ. Some of the best matches in the past have been battles over the IC title. Think Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon in the first ever ladder match or Randy Savage vs. Ricky the Dragon Steamboat at Wrestlemania 3 just to name a couple.

These days the IC title is just another meaningless piece of gold to go along with the US title and the tag team titles that have lost their shine. The wrestlers that carry the IC title are either mid card athlete’s that the WWE creative team are uncertain how to push (Kofi Kingston) or former WWE champs (CM Punk) that the creative team are unsure how to handle now that they’ve dropped the title. Often times the IC title and its Smackdown equivalent the US title aren’t even defended on the monthly PPV. This in itself shows that the titles are essentially meaningless. So what needs to be done? To return the IC title to its former glory the title needs to become something that is contested at every PPV. Something that has worth in the career’s of athlete’s on the rise. It needs to once again become the second most important title in the WWE.

The only solution in my opinion is to trim the fat so to speak in the WWE title picture. We need to unify the WWE and Heavy Weight titles. We need to unify the IC and US titles and while we are at let’s unify the Tag titles because having two tag titles with a company that might have 4 decent tag teams is ridiculous. With this the branding changes. Raw the flag ship show would become home of the Undisputed WWE Heavy Weight Championship. Smackdown would become home of the IC title. This would become a proving ground of sorts for the young up and comers and the fallen champions. The WWE power 25 would become the top 25 contenders for the Heavyweight title. These men would wrestle each week to determine their spot in contention and the top slot would become the number one contender. The wrestler at the bottom of the Power 25 after 3 months would drop to Smackdown and the current reigning IC champ would vacate his title and move to RAW. This makes the IC title something for all athletes on Smackdown to strive for. It also makes the IC title the second most important title in the sport.

Once again the IC title would be defended on every single PPV and the IC champ would be symbol of greatness. We can’t change the past, but we can make a better future. It’s time for a change; it’s time for an IC title that matters.
