Linda’s Thoughts - Judgment Day/Raw

Published May 21st, 2008 in Columns

You know I could very easily make this a very long column because I have so much to say about Judgment Day and Raw, but this time I will keep my pay per view thoughts to a minimum and spend most of this column on Raw and Mr. William Regal’s suspension, talk about the suspension catching me off guard. Okay let me just give you a few very short thoughts on Judgment Day first and then on to Raw and Regal.

Judgment Day turned out to be one hell of a show. I would say it was just as good as Backlash, and like Backlash I am so glad that I ordered it. The match of the night without a doubt was the Shawn Michaels/Chris Jericho match. This was just excellent, I wouldn’t say it was as fantastic as their Wrestlemania match, but it was right up there. This match alone was worth the money and I was so happy that they didn’t have a Batista run in. Dave Batista was used absolutely perfectly Sunday night. Instead of having him interfere we got a very short backstage segment with Batista interacting with HBK. Batista kept it short and sweet by saying that he would pick the time when he was going to hurt Michaels. Between the match and Batista’s announcement it didn’t’ get any better than all of this. There wasn’t one bad match, and the only let down for me was Vickie Guerrero again taking Taker’s win away from him. I didn’t mind that happening on free TV but when you pay good money for these shows, the fans don’t deserve the title to continue to be vacant. But I have to say I loved and I do me loved the heat that the Omaha, Nebraska crowd gave Vickie, they kind of got me past my anger over the vacancy. So Judgment Day was excellent and it led to another very strong Raw.

I really believe Vince is starting to realize that there are too many viewers passing on the shows. The reason I say this is because this was another Raw that had that extra special feel to it. I thought everything worked and like I said last week it helps when you don’t throw in Snitzky squash matches to kill the momentum. Things just flowed as far as I’m concerned. I won’t lie to you, when Jeff Hardy came out for the first match I was hyped until Umaga made his way out. The first thing that I said to my husband was WHY do we have to see this again. However, just like last week, the match turned out so well. I can’t believe I’m saying this, well really I can believe I’m saying this, Jeff Hardy and Umaga not only put on excellent matches against each other but there is strong chemistry between them. I will have to remember that when Umaga vs. Hardy happens again at One Night Stand I need to chill and just enjoy. I am going to skip over the Mr. Kennedy…Kennedy/Regal part and talk about that at the end, so let me tell you that I am finding myself quite interested in the Beth Phoenix/Melina angle. For the first time in a long time I enjoyed Melina at the announce table with Jerry The King Lawler and JR. For a long time Melina on the mic totally turned me off, but last night she came off well, and along with Phoenix this little storyline is coming along very well.

Let’s see Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels had the match of the night at Judgment Day, well Chris is two for two. His match last night against Batista was Raw’s match of the night. You know maybe I’m in the minority, but I never expected Batista to look as sharp as he did against Jericho and trust me that’s not a dig at Batista. It’s just that they have such different wrestling styles that I was amazed and thrilled with this match. And after this one was finished and Batista won, I loved how HBK walked out and just stared at the man who plans on hurting him. What a great match and segment. And Santino Rowdy Marella did it again with his very bad impersonation of Piper. I got a kick out of Santino’s big stomach and wig and of course his mic work was a riot. This feud with Marella and Piper is another bright spot on Raw. And the main event with John Cena and Triple H vs. Randy Orton and JBL came off well. What I didn’t like was the fact that again we are going to get Orton vs. Hunter at One Night Stand. I was really hoping that the feud would end after Judgment Day. And I don’t think that they will ever top their first Last Man Standing match at No Mercy, so my expectations for their ONS match won’t be set too high. And we again get JBL vs. Cena in a First Blood Match, which I guess I’m okay with as long as that’s it for JBL and Cena after that show.

So one hell of a Raw with one major surprise. I sure didn’t see William Regal getting the pink slip last night when he lost to Mr. Kennedy….Kennedy. Before I got more into the “firing” of Regal I can’t tell you how much I liked the match. I thought this was Kennedy’s best in a very long time and Regal looked very good out there. But he lost and Vince dumped him. So here I am thinking that next week Regal will manage to get his job back, but that isn’t going to happen for a while if at all. William Regal got a 60-day suspension for failing the Wellness Policy. It’s Regal’s second violation. Should he get one more then he’s out. I can’t tell you how much this upset me. Here the guy is getting a tremendous push, he is bringing so much to Raw and things seem to really be going well and he’s out. It bothered me so much when Jeff Hardy was suspended twice in less than a year and now it’s happening with Regal. WWE has put Regal at the top and rightfully, but now I just wonder when it comes back if that top spot will be open for him. I am so disappointed in Regal; it’s just something that the fans and WWE didn’t need.

Sunday and Monday night’s were a blast thanks to a great pay per view and a very good Raw, and now it’s on to Smackdown. And I just read that there’s a rumor, are you ready? Rumor has it that it’s a TLC match with Edge vs. Taker for the World Heavyweight Title at ONS. Now remember it’s a rumor. Okay I will leave you with a request from one of my readers and I will be back over the weekend with my Smackdown thoughts. I’m a huge wrestling fan but I liked wrestling better in the 80’s early 90’s so could you ask your reader’s where I could purchase some if not all the ppv’s from those times.
