Linda’s Thoughts - Smackdown/Batista

Published May 25th, 2008 in Columns

I can’t say enough about Mick Foley and the job he is doing as Smackdown’s color man. I know this isn’t the first time that I have mentioned Foley, but each week he just gets better and better. It’s just a pleasure to finally have someone that really knows what he’s talking about, he even makes Michael Cole come off fairly well. I am enjoying Smackdown so much better since Mick Foley replaced the Coach. And last night Smackdown put on another good show. I have a lot of positive things to say about the show and of course a few negative things to say as well. Hey I feel like I’m in a major slump, I haven’t written a bitchy column in quite a while. Well let’s see how long this trend lasts, listen if it lasted for a long time I could definitely live with that. Let me get to what didn’t do it for me and of course I will then talk about all the highlights of the show.

I don’t know if there is anything WWE can do to make me care about a Chuck Palumbo match. I had absolutely no interest watching Palumbo vs. Finlay last night. And it pains me to say that since I’m such a huge Finlay fan. Now the match was a hard worked match, but I found it so pointless because Palumbo has nothing going for him besides his size, well he can wrestle, but what I’m saying is there’s no charisma there. He’s a blank, and I guess that’s why I just can’t take to him. I know I’m way older than most of you so the fact that he customizes motorcycles means NOTHING to me. If they are going to continue to use this guy then I say reinvent him. So even though this was a good match I guess my feelings for Palumbo kept me from caring a thing about it.

Another match that came off well, but I still had a problem with was Deuce, Domino and Maryse vs. Jesse, Festus, and Cherry. Just like Finlay vs. Palumbo, this was a good high-energy match, but to me this would have been a perfect time to finally dump the 50’s gimmick for Deuce, Domino and Cherry. Now with D&D aligned with Maryse why not modernize the guys, I really believe the fans would wake up for a new gimmick. And Cherry should get a nice new makeover and we should never ever have to hear that entrance theme again. So I’m picking on two matches that were solid yet I guess it’s fair to say that the gimmicks take so much away from what happens in the ring. And now it’s all quite good. For instance I’m not a Vladimir Kozlov fan, however I think creative has handled him well. Truthfully by now I figured he would be going nowhere, but the fans seem to be accepting the character and I do like the fact that he comes out to no music and just dominates his opponents. I never expected to be somewhat into this character but I am. I can’t wait to see how he looks against Smackdown’s bigger guns, Last night we all knew Nunzio was going down, but at least he tried, and Kozlov chalked up another victory.

My match of the night had to be Batista vs. MVP. When I read the spoilers and saw that we were getting another MVP/Batista match I frowned, but the match was just excellent. I really would love to see MVP go to Raw and work with Hunter, Shawn Michaels and even John Cena. I think he’s really picked up his game and it’s time to get him off Smackdown. And Batista? He has come alive week after week. He did a tremendous job last night. I was so amazed when he leaped over MVP. I never saw that coming. This was an amazing match and along with this match I loved how Batista tore up the VIP Lounge and pissed off MVP. These guys were just excellent last night.

Another match that I thoroughly enjoyed was Matt Hardy and Kofi Kingston vs. Shelton Benjamin and Elijah Burke. This was a damn good match and I couldn’t be happier with the four guys that were in this one. Matt Hardy definitely looked like the leader, which makes me very happy. He looked like the seasoned veteran who was out there putting over the younger talent. I have to give props to everyone involved because this baby was just action packed. And before I talk about the main event. I have to say that a lot of my readers are not Vickie and Edge fans. Many of you are just waiting and hoping that these two split up. But I’m still a big fan of the lovers. I cannot get over the heat that Vickie gets when she’s out there and I believe she has Edge to thank for getting her over as a top BITCH. I love this couple because as I have said before I don’t find their relationship mushy, it’s all over the top and cheesy and that’s what makes them fun to watch. I am waiting for that one show where Edge dumps her and tells her he was only using her. That should be well worth watching. But until that happens, I say keep those crazy kids together. And as far as the main event goes, I liked it. I knew Chavo wasn’t going to beat Taker, well I knew that because I read the spoilers and read that La Familia was tossed out, but it didn’t matter. The match and segment came off very well. Taker looked good out there and I think Smackdown ended on a very positive note.

As I sad my venting columns seem to be on hold at least for now. Okay I won’t have a Raw column on Tuesday. I’m going to take the week off, but I will definitely be back next weekend with my One Night Stand picks. But even though I won’t have a column I am looking forward to Monday’s show. Will Theodore Long replace William Regal? Or is the GM position going to remain vacant for a while? With ONS a week away I am expecting a strong Raw going into that show.
