Linda’s Thoughts - Smackdown/WM24?

Published March 2nd, 2008 in Columns

Someone needs to tell the writers on Smackdown that Wrestlemania is just weeks away and that they need to build for that show and not fill the two hours with so much unnecessary segments.

I hate to say this, but in the last few weeks Smackdown has really gone downhill. I thought last week’s show was a drag; well last night’s show was just as bad if not worse.

With Wrestlemania now 4 weeks away I just can’t believe that we are still getting some of the matches that we have seen over and over again and these matches have nothing what so ever to do with the pay per view.

The segments that I am talking about are Deuce and Domino vs. any tag team and losing week after week. This week their opponents were Jimmy Wang Yang and Shannon Moore, but it doesn’t matter who D&D face since all they do is job. And then we got more of Palumbo vs. Jamie Noble which I guess wouldn’t bother me, but since WWE should be focusing on hyping Wrestlemania I would rather see more time given to probably one of the BEST heels in the business, Edge, and kind of put the Palumbo/Noble feud on the back burner until Wrestlemania is over. And if you think I stayed to watch Big Daddy V squashing Balls Mahoney well you are wrong, because I didn’t. Why in the hell would I want to see that match at all, let alone weeks before Wrestlemania? And while Batista and Kane taking on MVP and Khali turned out to be a good match, what was the point of it. Again it was let’s just throw in our big guy Khali and have him tag with MVP against Kane and Batista. Yeah that all makes a lot of sense.

Jesse and Festus vs. Miz and Morrison again was a good match, but like so much of the show here’s four guys just thrown into a match minus a storyline. This unfortunately is Smackdown’s problem and I’m starting to think that Smackdown is missing one guy very much and that one guy is MATT HARDY. It seems like Hardy’s absence since November has become a major reason why Smackdown is just so bland. Plus last night there was no Finlay, not that Finlay has anything really going on Smackdown since he is involved more and more with Vince McMahon, JBL and Hornswoggle. But Finlay does bring a lot to Smackdown. And let’s not forget that Rey Mysterio is now out as well. And you know what? You can add CM Punk to the list of the missing. When he was on Smackdown he added something to the shows. Punk and Mysterio gave us some nice action filled matches. Yeah I really believe the list of names that I mentioned are needed to return so badly.

Also explain this to me, last night we saw Maryse kissing Vickie’s ass well not literally, but telling Vickie everything she wanted to hear. Listen that was fine because I thought Maryse did a decent job, much better than I ever expected, however, I would love to know how Maryse got the power to tell Vickie Guerrero to grant Batista’s wish and face Umaga at Wrestlemania. That just seemed kind of weird to me that all of a sudden this chick shows up and advices Vickie. Also I have wanted to ask you this. Why is Theodore Long Vickie’s care giver? Granted I’m not losing sleep over Maryse or Long but I just find all of this so senseless.

And speaking of senseless, how come The Raw Rebound wasn’t the segment with Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair? Or the segment with Chris Jericho beating Jeff Hardy to qualify for the MITB match? Or why didn’t we get the highlights from the main event with Cena and Triple H vs. Kennedy and Orton? No the Raw Rebound was Vince and JBL and the whole Finlay is Hornswoggle’s father. This is what the highlight of Raw is? Somehow Vince’s ego has really directed his thinking into such a wrong direction. And one more thing, why didn’t Smackdown have a MITB qualifying match. Oh wait no because Smackdown really wasn’t about the road to Wrestlemania.

So sure I’m bitching like crazy about what I saw last night, but there were a few things that I liked. I loved Edge talking to Vickie backstage. When he said that he wanted to leave the United States for God’s country, Canada, I was hysterical. I laughed so hard, with the way Edge said it with such seriousness. Edge was so good during this segment and that’s why I say there should be much more of this guy on Smackdown, my God on the mic alone he brings so much to the shows. Also Big Show’s squash match against two jobbers, I could have cared less about, but I thought his promo was a strong one. I liked how Show managed to not only give it to Mayweather but he added that he could also squash Oscar De La Hoya. He delivered that line flawlessly and again I got a big kick out of it. And I will say that the Zak Ryder match against Undertaker was predictable yet quite entertaining and I guess these three segments really were all that I enjoyed.

This was a terribly weak and dull show and I would like to think that next Friday’s show will be a major improvement. We already know that Batista vs. MVP for the U.S. title is booked, and I think it’s safe to say that MVP isn’t losing that title. I’m hoping maybe this will bring back Matt Hardy and I also think this will bring in Umaga who might just show up to take Batista out of this match. I hate to start the weekend off on such a soar note, but hopefully Mondays’ Raw will come off well and I will have so many nice things to say about the show on Tuesday. Okay just to remind you I will be calling in tonight at 9:15 central time. You can hear me on From Over The Ropes at http://www.webradiowcwp.org/
