Former ECW/WWE Diva trying to get health care for wrestlers

According to a report in the Baltimore Sun, former ECW talent and WWE Diva Dawn Marie told the newspaper that she is close to setting up the first health care program for professional wrestlers. Dawn currently operates the Wrestlers Rescue program to improve the lives of both past and present professional wrestlers. Marie told reporter Kevin Eck, “I am within months of the first national health care program for professional wrestling,” Dawn Marie told Kevin Eck of the Baltimore Sun in an interview. “It’s going to change the industry in such a positive way.” Marie also pointed out that it’s difficult for professional wrestler to obtain affordable good quality health coverage when they are considered high-risk in what is considered a dangerous occupation. Marie said the health care plan will put everyone on a level playing field to obtain quality coverage. “With the health care, there’s no high-risk category; it’s normal category. The thing I think people don’t understand is that when you work with a major [wrestling] company, we don’t have health insurance,” she said. “We don’t even have anything to purchase into with our own money. And if we do, we’re considered high risk and we can’t even afford it. Not only can we not afford it for ourselves, we can’t afford it for our families.” Marie claimed she is currently in negotiations with two prominent insurance companies. She said everything would go through her and wrestlers who are approved will be given different options to find the right program to fit their needs.
